U.S. University Entrance Exams: Study at the American Center!

Are you interested in studying in the United States?  Anyone seeking acceptance at a U.S. university is required to take certain tests.  The U.S. Embassy’s American Center is here to help!  We have a large collection of test prep books and materials that you can use for free in our library section.  Send an email to AmericanCenterTunis@state.gov to book your spot 48 hours in advance.  In your email, please specify your full name, which tests you need to prepare for, and which day you intend to visit the American Center.

It’s important to note that the U.S. higher education system is very decentralized, so different colleges and universities have different requirements.  However, here are some general guidelines, as well as a summary of the resources we have to help you study.

For both undergraduate and graduate programs, U.S. universities require international students to demonstrate English language proficiency through an acceptable score on the TOEFL iBT or the IELTS.  The American Center has several prep books and vocabulary flashcards for these exams.

For undergraduate programs, you’ll most likely need to take at least one SAT test.

–An acceptable score on the standard SAT test (with two main sections: mathematics and reading/writing/language) is required for most undergraduate applications.
The SAT Essay is required or recommended for many – but not all – undergraduate applications.
SAT Subject Tests are also required or recommended for some – but not all – undergraduate applications.

The American Center has several SAT prep books as well as flashcards for individual or group study.

For business school applications, U.S. universities require an acceptable score on the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).  The American Center has several GMAT prep books and flashcard sets.

For law school applications, U.S. universities require an acceptable score on the LSAT (Law School Admission Test).  The American Center has several LSAT prep books.

For other graduate program applications, most U.S. universities require an acceptable score on the GRE (Graduate Record Examination).  The American Center has several GRE study guides as well as flashcards.

For physicians wishing to practice in the U.S., the American Center has many USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) prep books.
