U.S. Embassy Tunis, Tunisia: November 25, 2022

As we look forward to spending time with family and friends this holiday season, the Embassy reminds all Americans to be cautious, maintain a high level of vigilance, and take appropriate steps to enhance personal security during this holiday season.  In addition to Christmas markets and other festivities, the FIFA 2022 World Cup is under way. We recommend you avoid crowded venues, as they can be target rich opportunities for pick pocketers and other petty crimes.

The U.S. Embassy reiterates our standing guidance that U.S. citizens in Tunisia should stay alert in crowds and in locations frequented by tourists and foreigners. U.S. citizens are reminded to exercise caution and avoid areas where protests or large gatherings may occur.  Demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.

There has been a significant uptick in crime in the last six months, likely related to Tunisia’s ongoing economic challenges.  Violent and nonviolent crime – robbery, residential break-ins, vehicle theft, sexual assault, scams, and petty drug offenses – occur in Tunis and other large/tourist cities.  Most reported criminal incidents against foreigners are crimes of opportunity – pickpocketing, purse/phone snatching, sexual harassment, and petty theft.  Additionally, these crimes of opportunity can occur in heavily populated or crowded areas, during daytime or nighttime hours.  Violent crimes are not as frequent, but are increasing, and most often occur in isolated locations, including wooded areas, known to be frequented by vagrants and those engaging in illegal drug trade and use.  Unwanted intentional touching is a crime in Tunisia and the Embassy has received reports of unwanted touching and harassment of women, particularly when traveling alone or walking in isolated areas.
