The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia launches a “Heritage Project” In partnership with the Tunisian Scouts

We’re excited to announce our new partnership with the Tunisian Scouts to inspire youth to value and protect Tunisia’s rich cultural heritage!

Today, Ambassador Donald Blome joined the Chairman of Tunisian Scouts, Mohamed Ali Khiari to launch the U.S. Embassy-funded Tourath project that will benefit Scouts across Tunisia.  Through the Tourath project more than 70,000 Scouts will earn cultural heritage merit badges by volunteering at cultural sites and assisting with excavations and regional exhibitions.  As Ambassador Blome said during the ceremony, “This kind of mission is what the Scouts are all about.  They represent the best of Tunisian values and, of course, the impressive face of Tunisia’s future. The U.S. Embassy is proud of our partnership with the Scouts – and I look forward to new adventures together.”

The Director General of the National Institute of Patrimony Faouzi Mahfoudh, and Director General the Agency for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage Amel Hachana participated in today’s event to highlight the important role youth can play in protecting the country’s cultural treasures.  The Tourath project directly compliments our recently launched USD $50 million “Visit Tunisia” project to transform the tourism sector and boost economic growth by promoting cultural heritage sites in the interior previously overlooked by tourists.

Ambassador Remarks

Good morning, Chairman of Tunisian Scouts, Mohamed Ali Khiari, Director General of the National Institute of Patrimony, Faouzi Mahfoudh, and Director General the Agency for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage, Amel Hachana.

It’s wonderful to be here again with the Tunisian scouts. And as you always say: Be prepared [كن مستعدا]

Pause for scouts to repeat motto.

A year ago, we opened the new Scouts camp at Borj Sedria.

Today we launch a project to work with the Scouts to protect Tunisia’s incredible historical and cultural treasures.

More than 70,000 Scouts across the country will now be able to earn seventeen “Cultural Heritage” merit badges by volunteering at cultural heritage sites and assisting with excavations and regional cultural exhibitions.

This kind of mission is what the Scouts are all about.  They represent the best of Tunisian values and, of course, the impressive face of Tunisia’s future.  I’m proud of our partnership with the Scouts – and I look forward to new adventures together.

Happy trails and victorious hunting. [مسارات سعيدة وصيد ظافر]
