This month’s “Meet a Diplomat” program focused on a topic straight from the headlines: the Iowa caucus. Iowan Jeffrey Osweiler, the Embassy’s Consular Chief, explained how the small agricultural state became the testing ground for U.S. presidential candidates. After discussing the media frenzy surrounding the poll and describing the caucus as a community-based process, a “gathering of Neighbors” where participatory democracy is at play, he conducted a mock caucus for the audience and answered questions about the U.S. democratic process.
