“I Am That Girl:” Women’s Empowerment Through Social Media

A number of students and TechGirls alumnae participated in a workshop last week examining the role of social media and internet communication tools to advocate for women’s issues. Participants learned how these tools can help to raise awareness about women’s causes and promote positive change in real life. The workshop was conducted by Amie Williams, Executive Director and Co-founder of Global Girl Media; Ala Oueslati, YALA Academy member; and via skype Rahma Sghaier, YALA Tunisian Chapter Coordinator. Participants learned how social media can bring people together, foster dialogue, and inspire action for and commitment to a cause. One student noted that she and her colleagues used to use Facebook only to chat and play games, and now realize they can use social media for interesting and valuable causes as well.
