The U.S. Embassy in Tunis will host 9 local interns under the Summer 2023 Foreign National Student Intern Program (FNSIP). This Program provides an excellent opportunity for local students to gain valuable work experience in a diplomatic environment. This is NOT an offer of permanent employment; there will be no benefits or compensation, or future employment rights attached to these internships.
Please note that post has requested from the Office of Civil Rights the permission to compensate local interns, but the program does not yet have the authority for compensation. Washington is working on updating the policy for next year.
Location:
Students will be offered an internship at the U.S. Embassy in Tunis.
Duties:
Intern duties may vary according to the functional section of assignment (i.e. Public Diplomacy, Management, etc.).
Eligibility Requirements for Local Students:
To be eligible for the FNSIP, students MUST MEET ALL the following criteria:
- Must be at least 18 years old at the time of participation in the program.
- Must be either citizens or permanent legal residents of Tunisia.
- Must have been enrolled full-time in university as undergraduate or postgraduate students at the time the program begins.
- Must be returning to university studies upon completion of the internship.
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Must be available to begin the internship in June 2023. Interns usually serve for approximately 10 – 12 weeks during the summer.
- Must be available to work at least 20-30 hours per week, 4 to 6 hours per day.
- Must possess computer skills with a background in Excel, Word, and other Microsoft products required.
Qualifications:
The Embassy will consider students studying at universities with a broad range of majors, such as humanities and arts, engineering, architecture, law, social sciences, business or economics, public administration, finance, accounting, journalism, political science, computer science as well as majors identified with international affairs.
The U.S. Mission will also consider hiring issues such as conflict of interest, nepotism, residency status, and whether the internship applicant has a work permit.
Additional Requirements for Hosting Sections:
1.- Public Affairs Section:
- Assist in planning, designing, and implementing digital content and social media campaigns for Embassy social media platforms.
- Assist with audience evaluation and engagement.
- Assist with maintaining editorial calendar and planning documents.
2.- Economic Section/ Environmental Team:
- Assist in drafting Official Informal’s on daily economic developments, especially focused on environmental, science, technology, and health (ESTH) and energy challenges.
- Enhance section reporting on ESTH/energy.
- Assist in planning and executing Embassy Green Team activities and act as a liaison for the Team with outside stakeholders.
- Assist with speakers/briefing programs as needed.
3.- Human Resources Section:
- Assist in the new arrivals process by maintaining and organizing the information for transfer season.
- Assist in maintaining and updating employees’ evaluations database.
- Assist in maintaining Retirees database.
- Assist in drafting internal notices.
4.- Information Resources Management/ Information Services Center:
- Inventory the disposable hard drives (HDD) and computer memories (RAM).
- Inventory the disposable smart phones (iPhone and Blackberry devices).
- Inventory the disposable laptops and IT equipment (monitor, desktop, etc.).
- Package the hardware equipment to be sent to Frankfurt for final disposal.
5.- Financial Management Office (FMO):
- Records Management: Assist in filing Class B Cashier transactions.
- Liaison with the vendors with regards of payment status.
- Assist with speakers/briefing programs and university outreach.
- Upload invoices to the payment system.
- Provide administrative support to the FMC Team.
6.- Management Section /Facilities Management – Architecture:
- Conceptual development of architectural and space planning project through sketches.
- Development of concepts into packages for estimating and bidding.
- Material and product research.
- Updating AutoCAD drawings per existing conditions.
- Other architectural and space planning duties as assigned.
7.- USAID/Democracy and Governance:
- Populate and assist in the design of a database for CSO, government, and other contacts.
- Support file management including to compile photos and videos from USAID DG implementing partners.
- Assist with speakers/briefing programs.
- Support site visits to USAID-funded activities (including notetaking, translation and interpretation).
8.- Office of Building Operations OBO/ Civil Engineering Students only
- Review and assist in the submittals, RFIs and IGEs review process.
- Review Civil/Structure drawings, details, and technical specifications.
- Participate in the daily site inspections.
- Participate in the project meetings held by OBO and the contractor, which include the following: Weekly Progress Meeting, QA/QC Meeting, Joint Health and Safety Committee Meeting, Schedule Update, etc.
- Review and participate in the evaluation of material samples and catalogs, brochures, shop drawings, and installation manuals.
- Internship will require to participate in in an active construction site. Populate and assist in the design of a database for CSO, government, and other contacts.
9.-Office of Building Operations OBO/Architecture students only:
- Review and assist in the submittals, RFIs and IGEs review process.
- Review architectural drawings, details, and technical specifications.
- Participate in the daily site inspections.
- Participate in the project meetings held by OBO and the contractor, which include the following: Weekly Progress Meeting, QA/QC Meeting, Joint Health and Safety Committee Meeting, Schedule Update, etc.
